DOI : 10.23893/1307-2080.APS6121 Viewed : 6537 - Downloaded : 1566 Paracetamol tablets were formulated with Terminalia randii gum as a binder at varying concentrations (1-10%, w/w) and the compressional characteristics was compared with polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). The compressional properties were evaluated using density measurements, Heckel and Kawakita equations. The mechanical properties were evaluated using friability, crushing strength, and crushing strength-friability ratio (CSFR), while the release properties were studied using disintegration time, dissolution time and Kitazawa equations. Formulations containing Terminalia gum showed faster onset of plastic deformation with a lower total amount of plastic deformation. The crushing strength and release properties of the formulations increased, while friability decreased, with increase in binder concentration. Formulations containing PVP had better mechanical properties as seen in the high CSFR values. Formulations produced with Terminalia gum produced tablets with slower dissolution. This study shows that the onset of plastic deformation was faster, but the total amount of plastic deformation was lower in formulations containing Terminalia gum.
