Characterization of Cucumis sativus (Linnaeus) Mucilage and its Excipient Potentials in Metronidazole Tablet Formulation

DOI : 10.23893/1307-2080.APS.05527 Viewed : 17365 - Downloaded : 6080 The objective was to characterize Cucumis sativus mucilage (CSM) and evaluate its binding potentials in metronidazole tablet formulation.

Characterization was done using proximate, elemental, material and rheological properties including FTIR. Tablets were produced by wet granulation with CSM, corn starch or acacia as binder (1-4%w/w) and evaluated using mechanical and release properties.

Generally, the properties of CSM showed that it can be used for oral formulations and it has significantly higher swelling index. The mechanical properties of metronidazole tablets as described by crushing strength?friability ratio ranked acacia > corn starch > CSM. An increase in the concentration of CSM produced faster disintegration for all tablets as opposed to corn starch and acacia which led to slower disintegration. The dissolution profiles of the tablets from CSM (4%w/w) showed highest similarity (f2=61.60) to those of acacia at 2%w/w.

CSM has excipient potentials that can be further developed for tablet production. Keywords : Cucumis sativus mucilage, binding potential, metronidazole tablet
