Department of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy, Istanbul University, 34116-Beyazit, Istanbul, Turkey Viewed : 16858 - Downloaded : 69 The alkaloids of two varieties of Papaver rhoeas namely var. rhoeas and var. strigosum growing in Turkey have been investigated. The structures of the isolated alkaloids have been confirmed by spectral methods. It has been shown that the major alkaloids isolated from the samples were all different types belonging to proaporphine (mecambrine), benzylisoquinoline (papaverine) and rhoeadine (isorhoeadine). The existence of medicinally important alkaloids papaverine is of significance. Keywords : ALKALOIDS, CHEMICAL STRAINS, PAPAVER RHOEAS VAR. RHOEAS, VAR. STRIGOSUM
