Species belonging to the Rheum genus have a long-standing history in folk medicine, particularly in treatments aimed at lowering blood sugar, alleviating digestive disorders, and preventing cancer. These species are rich in various phytochemical compounds, primarily anthraquinones, flavonoids, stilbenes, and tannins, and are associated with a wide range of biological activities, including antioxidant, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, cytotoxic, hepatoprotective, and gastrointestinal regulatory effects. Despite being a well-known group among the general public, there is a notable scarcity of comprehensive studies that simultaneously address the taxonomy, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and advanced extraction techniques related to the Rheum genus. In particular, research involving supercritical fluid technology is extremely limited globally and has not yet been reported in Türkiye. This review presents a multidisciplinary and comprehensive overview of the taxonomic status, morphological characterization, chemical composition, biological activities of Rheum species, and emphasizes the significance of supercritical fluid extraction in isolating bioactive compounds. The study is based on structured evaluations derived from reliable, peer-reviewed scientific publications and academic databases. This holistic assessment aims to highlight the medicinal potential of Rheum L. species and their pharmaceutical relevance, ultimately guiding future academic research and contributing to the literature.
